1895
Revra DePuy founds DePuy Manufacturing in Warsaw, Indiana, on the promise of a fiber splint to replace the wooden barrel staves then used to set fractures. DePuy became the first commercial orthopaedic manufacturer in the world.

1905
J.O. Zimmer, who later begins Zimmer Manufacturing, now Zimmer, is hired as DePuy's first sales representative.

1921
Revra DePuy dies from heart trouble. His wife, Winifred DePuy, takes control of DePuy Manufacturing.

1924
Winifred remarries Herschel Leiter, who takes control of the company.

1927
After several unsuccessful attempts to purchase DePuy Manufacturing, J.O. Zimmer goes into business for himself across town.

1933
The most prestigious of the orthopaedic surgeon associations, the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS), is founded in Chicago. Today, the AAOS boasts membership of over 18,000.

1934
Another DePuy sales representative in the Tennessee area, Don Richards, leaves DePuy to open his own manufacturing company, Richards, in Memphis, Tennessee.

1943
The Allied Industrial Workers of America, Local 809, begins representing DePuy production employees.

1949
Winifred DePuy Leiter dies, leaving Herschel in control of the DePuy Company. Herschel marries Amrette Webb Ailes.

1950
Herschel Leiter dies. DePuy leads the industry with $3.2 million in sales.

1951
The widowed Amrette marries Harry Hoopes.

1965
A group of investors buys DePuy from the Hoopes. Keaton Landis is elected president.
